What is an information return form?
An information return form is used by businesses to notify government agencies and taxpayers about taxable payments. For example, when a company hires and pays a contractor, it is required to file a 1099 form to report it. When employers pay their employees, they must file W-2 forms at the end of the year. The IRS or the SSA uses the information to determine individuals’ tax liabilities. On the other hand, the Affordable Care Act (or ACA) forms are used to indicate if the business has insurance coverage for their employees or may be subject to ACA penalties.
How to file information returns forms?
While information forms can be filed using paper forms. You need to get the correct form, fill it out, and file with the IRS. In addition to filing with the IRS, you are also required to provide a copy to your contractor. Instead of filing on paper, you can also file electronically.
Filing information returns electronically is the IRS- and SSA-preferred method. If you have 250 or more information returns, you must file electronically with the IRS or SSA.
Information returns are generally due at the beginning of the year, with due dates, including January 31st, February 28th, and March 31st. Exact filing methods and due dates vary between information returns. You can also apply for an extension to file information return forms if you cannot file in time.
Correction Forms
If you made an error and found out after filing, you will need to file correction forms. We support the filing of corrected forms. Check out our Correction Process.
